DIY Denim Shorts

I am officially convinced that a good pair of denim jeans is a unicorn. I have tried on no less than 50 pairs of denim jeans this season. I ordered nearly every jean off Nordstrom and have tried on every jean in every store at my mall. It's always been a struggle. I think designers are unaware that people who aren't 17 would like to wear denim jeans and not have their cheeks hang out of them when they bend over. I just want a good pair of distressed jean shorts. Is that too much to ask? Apparently so.
I had an old pair of denim jean shorts in my closet that I sort of liked. I liked the fit and length but the wash was just okay and they felt like they could use an update--they were kind of mom-ish. Since I gave up on my hunt for the perfect distressed jean short, I decided to make my own. I figured I wouldn't care if I messed up on these jean shorts since I was never wearing them anymore anyway. I watched a few YouTube videos on how to distress some jeans and decided to give it a try. I ended up being SO happy with the way they turned out! I really don't have any tips or tricks to it. I'm definitely no expert but it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. It took me about 45 minutes and I mostly used a razor (like, the kind I use to shave with) to do it which helped with the wash and made the jeans look a little lighter. My biggest take-away from my little DIY project was to focus on distressing and getting holes around the front pockets because it will make the pockets show and give the jeans a more distressed look. And you don't have to worry about having a hole/seeing skin because the pocket will be there. A lot of the YouTube videos said that the more you washed the jeans the more distressed they would become but I wear mine weekly and they haven't gotten any more distressed than they were the first time I wore them. I probably would have distressed them a little more had I known they would hold up they way they have.
I just thought I'd share because I feel like a lot of women are on the hunt for some cute distressed jean shorts and it seems like the consensus is that they are impossible to find unless you're comfortable having your bottom hang out of them. So if you're feeling crafty, find a pair of jeans that are a good fit and length then distress them yourself!
